Surgical scar removal

Surgical scar removal is a procedure to reduce, improve, or eliminate the appearance of scars caused by injury, surgery, burns, or acne. The goal is to achieve better cosmetic appearance and sometimes restore function.

Types of Scars Treated:

  • Hypertrophic scars – Raised, thick scars

  • Keloids – Overgrown scar tissue beyond the original wound

  • Atrophic scars – Sunken or pitted scars (common after acne)

  • Contracture scars – Tight scars restricting movement (common after burns)

Techniques / Procedures:

  1. Excision (Surgical Removal):

    • Scar tissue is cut out, and skin is sutured carefully to minimize new scarring.

    • Often used for large or thick scars.

  2. Z-Plasty / W-Plasty:

    • Reorients scar lines to make them less noticeable.

    • Improves function in contracture scars.

  3. Skin Grafting or Flap Surgery:

    • Used for extensive scars or areas with tissue loss.

  4. Laser Therapy (Adjunct):

    • Can improve color, texture, and appearance of scars.

  5. Steroid or Silicone Treatments (Adjunct):

    • Reduce inflammation, thickness, or redness.

Indications:

  • Cosmetic concern

  • Scar causing functional limitation (e.g., restricting movement)

  • Pain, itching, or recurrent inflammation from the scar

Risks / Complications:

  • Infection

  • Bleeding

  • Recurrence or new scar formation

  • Rarely, delayed healing

Aftercare:

  • Keep the area clean and protected

  • Avoid sun exposure

  • Follow suture removal schedule if applicable

  • Apply silicone sheets or prescribed ointments

  • Follow-up for monitoring healing and scar appearance
