Hymenoplasty

Hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure to reconstruct or repair the hymen, the thin membrane partially covering the vaginal opening. It is usually performed for cultural, personal, or psychological reasons.


Purpose / Indications:

  • Restore hymenal tissue for cultural or social reasons

  • Personal or psychological desire

  • Repair hymen after injury or accidental tearing

  • Occasionally for medical reasons after trauma


Procedure:

  • Usually done under local or general anesthesia

  • Edges of the remaining hymenal tissue are stitched together

  • In some cases, biodegradable materials are used to reconstruct the membrane

  • Outpatient procedure; patients can go home the same day

Risks / Complications:

  • Infection

  • Pain or discomfort

  • Scarring

  • Rarely, bleeding or tissue reaction


Aftercare:

  • Keep the area clean and dry

  • Avoid sexual intercourse for 4–6 weeks

  • Take prescribed antibiotics or painkillers

  • Follow-up with the surgeon for healing assessment
